Limestone is porous & absorbsOne of the unique qualities fundamental to Indiana Limestone is that it is a porous stone. Unlike brick or block, limestone will draw from the materials around it, including mortar. There are methods to setting limestone which prevent it from drawing in undesired color.
Consideration needs to be given to the environment in which the stone will reside. Will the stone be exposed to commercial cleaning agents and waxes? In order to avoid discoloration of the stone (by the stone absorbing these agents) a special technique needs to be used to treat the stone and prevent absorption. RepointingRepointing, the removal of old mortar and replacement with new, weather tightens the wall. There are techniques unique to the removal and replacement of failed mortar around limestone. Limestone cleaningAs a porous material, limestone does require cleaning in order to retard staining and keep its softness of color. You cannot however simply spray it with a pressure washer or scrub it as you would brick. There are techniques to cleaning limestone which draw the impurities out, rather than drive them deeper into the stone. Storage
